Who We Are

The Nevada/California Indian Housing Association (“NV/CAL IHA”) represents member Indian Tribes, Indian Housing Authorities and Tribally Designated Housing Entities from the two states of Nevada and California.  NV/CAL IHA is a non-profit joint powers organization that represents the housing interests of its member Tribes in California and Nevada.  The association seeks to accomplish its objectives through exchanging information and providing education and training opportunities for its membership.

There are 110 federally recognized Indian Tribes in California, most of which participate in the HUD-funded Indian Housing Programs. Many Tribes in the northern, northwestern, and eastern areas of the state are very rural and isolated.  In contrast, the Tribes located in the southern areas, though rural, are located near major cities. Over forty of these tribes were terminated in the 1960s and have successfully reversed the termination and regained federal recognition.  Many lack an adequate land base to provide housing for their members, so acquiring land is an essential part of their housing programs.   The value of land in California is high, and with the cost of an average home in California is $800,000.00, so necessarily the development cost of housing in California exceeds the national average cost of housing development.

The State of Nevada is represented by 27 federally recognized Tribes, consisting of traditional lands of the Northern Paiute, Washoe, Western Shoshone and Southern Paiute.  Many of the Nevada Tribes are located in very rural and isolated areas which limit the availability of contractors and supplies for housing projects and programs. The economic base for these Tribes is diverse, as some people farm or ranch and others work for the Tribes and adjacent communities.

Additional funding to develop and modernize housing units and adequate infrastructure throughout the Tribes is essential to providing homes and services for Tribal members.
